Helen and Paul Zuck

Paul Zuck and Helen (Elana) Chuhaniuk were married about 1923. Helen's parents Alexander and Evdokia came from Ukraine and farmed near Oscar Lake, Saskatchewan. The Chuhaniuk children were William, Polly, Helen and Michael. Helen's mother died when the buggy she was riding in overturned. Grandfather Alex was said to speak 5 languages and was active in the church possibly as a deacon at mass. He later married Sophia Kosminka and they had eight children together Peter, Dick, Alex, John, George, Walter, Margie and Maria.

Paul and Helen farmed near Blaine Lake Saskatchewan where their children were born. The family moved about 1936 to a farm at MacDowell just south of Prince Albert where they built a very nice home and broke new land. Paul's health had been good but he contracted tuberculosis and was hospitalized in the Prince Albert Sanatorium to recover. Sadly he passed away on March 4th 1942. With the help of her brothers, especially Mike, neighbors and friends as well as the three children, the farm continued. Grandma Anna Zuck lived with us and was a big help with the household. Eventually more land was broken and made more productive. There were the usual farm animals to provide food and a bit of income from the sale of cream and surplus eggs and pork. Grandma(who?) would plant a big garden with many rows of potatoes to hill. Each winter there was a barrel of dill pickles and sauerkraut in the cellar. The original house burned one cold winter night. The fore started in the chimney and spread burning the house to the ground. A second house was erected with Uncle Nick's old house with an addition built by Uncle Dan.

In 1956 Helen married Bill Chernowski of Red Deer Hill. They lived on Bill's farm later retiring to Prince Albert. Bill died first and mom was alone again till her passing in March 1993

Paul and family had many struggles as did most people of that era. It is wished that they could have been with us longer, but we are thankful for the memories
