Julie Saganski (Zuck), Her Family and Story

The Family Years 1960's.

We had a number of new comers in 1960, Andrea was born on on February 2 to Victor and Henrietta, and our Carolyn was born on June 23. Jane Saganski was born to Jules and Nan on November 10th.

The Zuck estate was dissolved and we paid Victor the average value in lieu of land as there were only four quarters, and the farmland was divided amongst the five of us. I received one quarter of land, Boruck's. Peter decided to farm it along with helping his Dad with his farming too. That spring we also purchased Shkwara's quarter for $6,000. Peter spent weekends farming. Iris Nettie grads.JPGThis summer we bought our green station wagon and Nettie quit teaching in Marengo and came to live with us to go to university for her degree in Home Economics. Peter's sister Iris also quit teaching going to university for her Bachelor of Education degree. So we had them both going to school.

I was elected first vice president of the St. Peter and Paul's Ukrainian Catholic Womens League of Canada (U.C.W.L.C.). Mrs Syroishka was president and Nettie helped me a lot with looking after Carolyn when I would go to meetings.

In 1961 Peter decided to farm with better equipment than what his Dad was using so we bought a used John Deere tractor and a discer. We took a holiday trip to Victoria British Columbia. Carolyn was a year old and we had a nice trip staying with Bud and Doris. Nettie and Iris continued with their studies. Mrs. Syroishka was ill so I conducted most of the U.C.W.L. meeting that summer. That summer Sts. Peter and Paul's ventured into the running of a booth at the exhibition. It was quite successful and this venture we started continued for many years. That fall I officially was elected and installed as president of the U.C.W.L.

In 1962 Peter joined the Sheptisky Knights of Columbus Council, a Ukrainian council in Saskatoon. Jerry Muzyka was the Grand Knight and Peter was Deputy Grand Knight. We attended our first K of C State Convention in Waskesiu Saskatchewan that May. In June Peter became grand Knight and that fall Peter joined the degree team with Bill Reid as confirming Officer. The team, a group of five, Emil Lorne, Matt Hertz, Walter Podiluk, Joe and Bill Kammermayer, Bob Smith, (?) Stensrud, and Ed Benesh. At least once a month Peter would go off with the Knight's for the weekend and this was the beginning of our involvement with the K of C.

On september 5 1962 our son Michael was born. Baby Micheal.JPGNettie and Iris graduated that spring and Nettie moved to teach home Economics at the Yorkton high school. Iris continued to live with us and taught at St. James and bought herself a new Ford Comet. Peter's sister Iris and Henry Spilchuk who she met attending university started dating. He seemed a nice young man and we all welcomed his visits. In March of 1963 Iris and Henry became engaged with wedding plans that August. Mom and Dad Saganski celebrated 40 years of marriage in May. On August 17, 1963 Iris and Henry were married in the Krydor church with Fr. Luzney officiating. They had a lovely wedding with Auntie Nellie Saganski being a big help to Baba S. and I preparing for the nuptials. Iris asked our two little girls to attend her, Carolyn and Jane Saganski as flower girls, our Eileen and Gail Spilchuk were the junior bridesmaids and Patricia and Verna Saganski as bridesmaids. Baba made the dresses for Patricia, Eileen, Carolyn and Jane, They had another wedding reception in Ituna Saskatchewan a week later and then Henry and Iris moved to teach at Wishart Sask.

That summer the crops were just wonderful and anticipating a bumper harvest we decided to purchase a used Massy combine so we could take off the crop ourselves. We also bought a 2100 bushel steel grainary for the Boruch quarter section. It was quite a challenge assembling it, what a lot of screws!

Peter was feeling restless at work in the spring 1964, no future, and he considered teaching shop in the Blaine Lake high school so as to be closer to the farm, keeping other options open. While ruminating Ollie, the Dominion Sound foreman died of a heart attack and Peter was approached to be the Job Superintendent for Regina and Saskatoon areas. I decided that it was time for me to learn how to drive so I took lessons and the summer of 1964 I was turned loose on the roads as a qualified driver.

Iris and Henry were blessed with a tiny Kathleen May 31 1964 and they all moved into Saskatoon where Henry started teaching at Holy Cross high school. We sold our Clarence Avenue home for $17K and moved to Regina at 8 Gardiner Avenue Gardner Avenue Christmas.JPGIn August in time for Eileen starting grade XII and David's grade VI at St. John's school. Carolyn was affected by the upheaval and developed a ssstutter, but with a referral to a speech therapist at the General Hospital she overcame it when in grade I. The two smallest ones made friends with Lorna and Brian Yurris from next door and I became fond of Jeanne Yurris as well as Iris Walls from across the street and in the continuing years we did much together. Our neighbors Iris and Victor Wall adopted two little girls, first a sweet little Debbie and a couple of years later Jodie. One spring when Debbie was about four, and Jodie two, I made them both summer coats and bonnets from used ladies coats. Debby's was blue and Jodie's a light beige. They were the cutest little outfits and many the time Iris said she was stopped and asked where she got them. Then we were home Moms with no money but lots of time. Iris and I started bun making and one Wednesday she would make four trays and deliver two over to me and the next week I reciprocated. This lasted till after the kids started school and I started casual nursing at the General. 1965 Carolyn started kindergarten at St. John's.

Dominion Sound Co. was dissolved in 1966, but Ron Wood and Lorne Cogger, who worked there, bought the Saskatoon and Regina branches forming Wood Cogger Ltd. Peter was asked to stay on with them as overseer. Eileen graduated grade VIII 'recommended' and started at the girl's school Marion High that fall. Carolyn started grade I and I still had Michael at home for company. We continued making frequent trips to Krydor from spring to fall and with all the gas we used, Esso, at the time were giving rewards of a place setting of dishes for every $40 at the pumps. Afterward they offered glasses, casserole and baking dishes, even flatware. They were of good quality and I gave Eileen a black and white twelve place setting. I still have and use a set of twenty four places, all from the gas to make the trips to and from Krydor. David graduated 1967 from grade VIII and was also 'recommended'. Up till then all his report cards said David could do better and in his last year he really applied himself and did real well. He said he wasn't going to write any finals. That fall he started high school at Campion College that was run by the Jesuit Order. Our youngest little guy Michael started kindergarten and I found myself at 'loose ends' alone at home. Vera's Dad had thyroid cancer and in May we buried him in Edmonton. Luckily I had flown to see him the week before he died. Mom and Dad Bocuirko, Vera's folks, were like my surrogate parents the years I studied nursing in Edmonton and as a bonus daughter I was always included in all the family events. I fondly remember many the visit and meal at their home. When Michael started grade I in 1968 I decided it was time to return nursing part time at the General in the Urology department. Some found it depressing working with the old men patients but I enjoyed them. Those poor men were quite frequent patients and would light up and smile when they spotted one of us regulars on duty. Then the hospital went to a policy of just hiring full time nurses and I decided it wasn't time for full time shift work.
