Grandfather John Zuck came from the district of Sokol in the Ottoman Empire that is now the western Ukraine. He was the son of Gabriel Zuck and Barbara(nee:Melynchuk). Grandmother Anna was the daughter of Rose and Bartholomew Deneka.

With war breaking out, and with sons of conscription age, they planned to emigrate to South America. However, at the last minute, supposedly of bad reports from earlier families that went to South America they changed their plans at the last minute and instead went to Canada. They had a family of six children: Daniel(Donald), Anthony, Barbara, Paul, Antonia and Katherine. After disembarking in the port of Montreal Quebec, they took the train in 'cattle class' to Rosthern Saskatchewan. Oxen and a wagon were purchaced and they went to the Hafford area where relatives had preceeded them.

Baptized Daniel, he used the name Donald. He married Dora Bodnarchuk daughter of Fred and Hafia from the St. Julian District(?). Three children were born to Daniel and Dora, they were Edward, Helen and James.

In 1920 the Zuck family moved to Detroit Michigan, where Dan had a sister Barbara (Klimchuk) who lived in the Hamtramik district of Detroit. Later the family moved to Auburn New York. Dan worked in a paper mill and later a button factory. It was in Auburn that Dora was stricken with consumption (Tuberculosis). The doctors advised her to go to a dry climate, as this was the only care at the time. This persuaded the family to move back to the Hafford district. As Dan's son Edward recalls the three young children were apparently abandonded by their father Dan at a New York train station where - according to Edward - him, his younger brother Jimmy and his younger sister Helen made it back to Hafford Saskatchewan via trains, hunger, cold, and fear of getting picked up to be put into an orphanage miles away from home. This abandonment that Dan committed by leaving his children at the train station - would foster a hatred and resentment between Edward and his father Dan - till the day Dan died. In 1934 Dora died at the age of 37 at the Prince Albert sanitorium. The children stayed with Paul and Helen Zuck and later with Paulie Zaychowski. They attended schools at Craigmore and Lancaster.

In 1937, during the depression and drought, Dan, brother Paul and brother in law Adam Hotzak (Antonia) came to the MacDowell-Clouston area which was in the 'green belt' during those times. Don settled in RM463 south half of SEC30 TWP46 R? W2 and Adam settled in the north half. Most of the equipment and supplies were brought in from Prince Albert by team and wagon. A great part of the trip was on the old Carlton Trail that connected Winnipeg Manitoba to Edmonton Alberta.

Paul and Helen Zuck and later Paulie Zaychowsktook took the three children in, but they were never afforded the opportunity to attend university like their relatives. Helen was a free spirit - beautiful - but free and adventurous, Jimmy played it cool and became a mail man. Dan spent most of his time carpentering, so the farming was done by Edward. Edward established himself as the head millwright at the old coop lumber yard/store and farmed wheat, rape seed or whatever he thought he could do well at. Considering the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool was sucking the life out of most farmers by controlling the grain the farmers sold. This was why later the Canadian Wheat Board was started and why farmers now should be careful at wanting the Wheat Board disbanded.

Dan died in 1974. He and Dora are both buried in the Greek Catholic cemetery in Prince Albert.
